Initially thought to be an inactive compound found in cannabis, CBDA has recently garnered much more media interest with the launch of a patented CBDA “ester” (a fascinating molecular variant of CBD) along with glowing reports of its efficacy from both doctors and medical cannabis patients.

On the surface the difference between CBD and CBDA seems simple. The active molecules for CBD are formed when CBDA is exposed to heat (decarboxylation). In the past CBDA was given credit for the compounds needed for the much more well-known CBD cannabidiol, however CBDA was seen to be inactive and there was little investigation into the characteristics of that cannabinoid.

But CBDA is now undergoing a renaissance with increased media attention. After decades of living in the shadow of CBD, CBDA is finally receiving the attention it deserves and rightly so. Researchers are finding a host of previously unknown benefits described in the accounts of physicians and medical cannabis patients.

Studies have revealed the positive benefits of CBDA such as soothing and suppressing nausea and vomiting caused by toxins and motion sickness including real relief from those suffering from cancer and other serious diseases that often suffer anticipatory nausea while needing to undergo brutal chemotherapy treatment. This type of nausea has no effective pharmaceutical treatment and the ability of doctors to use CBDA as a medicine has finally allowed these patients some form of relief.

CBDA Packs Important Inhibitors for the Human Body

The most sought-after gain from CBDA are its anti-inflammatory properties. In laymen’s terms, any treatment that inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-2) works well to combat inflammation throughout the body. Studies have shown that selectively inhibiting COX-2 can have as much as a 9-fold higher selectivity as on COX-1. Without immersing ourselves into a scientific discussion of negative effects of COX-2 on the human body in terms of inflammation, we can state that it appears CBDA has a much stronger effect in inhibiting COX-2.

In a strange turn of events, CBDA really began to garner attention through an oversight. A teenager was suffering several seizures each day and her health began to suffer as a result. A physician found a local source for CBD oil and the young patient began to show signs of improvement via fewer and fewer seizures. It was only after the doctor discovered the locally sourced CBD oil had not been exposed to heat and began to look closer at the CBD product and discovered the teenager had been ingesting CBDA.

It is important to note that many cannabinoids mutate at the molecular level when exposed to heat, a process known in scientific circles as decarboxylation. The “raw” plant produces an “acidic” or more natural version of select cannabinoids, and these can be very beneficial for patients by allowing specific treatments and remedies. When various cannabinoids are exposed to heat, such as in the process of producing cannabis oil and nano, the molecular changes can also produce a transmuted set of cannabinoids. It is precisely this process that transforms the “acidic” CBDA into an altered form of cannabinoid commonly known as CBD.

A side-by-side review with CBD revealed that saving the single step of decarboxylation had made the medicinal powers of the oil (CBDA) become exponentially more effective against these involuntary seizures and spurred medical and research teams to begin studying CBDA more intently.

CBD gained much of its fame based on its celebrated anti-seizure effects that have helped thousands with serious and sometime life-threatening seizures. The only approved CBD pharmaceutical in the U.S. is a purified CBD tincture called Epidiolex, produced by GW Pharma. This company has done multiple studies that show CBDA has superior bioavailability and faster onset than CBD, making CBDA a very attractive option for development.

Scientists Discovering More Benefits from CBDA

The scientific community has found that CBDA may halt the spread of malignant cells to other part of the body for certain types of breast cancer and researchers are eager to discover far less invasive medicines and treatments for various cancers using plant-based and all natural medicines.

As CBDA does not require heat to access its benefits, simply ingesting a small amount of cannabis is sufficient to promote relief. Just as with other trace minerals and vitamins such as zinc and iron, a small amount of naturally occurring CBDA contained within a few cannabis leaves in your next salad or leafy vegetables can help prevent inflammation and promote good health.

The newest edition of CBDA cannabinoid is a synthetic compound created by a research team, a stabilized version easier to work with in the lab and has a longer shelf life. Researchers continue to investigate and discover more benefits because of increased scrutiny.
